Huckleberry Gates

Jamie Anderson in Huckleberry Canyon

The 320 acres to the east of Grandview Express is known as Huckleberry Canyon - long lauded by Tahoe locals as some of the best and most accessible backcountry terrain in Lake Tahoe. Now incorporated inside Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort's boundary, this steep and deep terrain is classified as Extremely Challenging and is appropriate for Experts Only.

The cliff drops, cornices, rock chutes, open bowls, gladed runs, and powder pillows in Huckleberry Canyon are accessible through five backcountry gates from the top of Grandview Express.

THE GATES

  • Gate 1 - Castle Creek - mostly untouched tree runs with natural jibs
  • Gate 2 - North Bowl - gladed skiing and riding at its absolute best
  • Gate 3 - Big Pine - spines, pillows, cliffs - the doorway to the extreme
  • Gate 4 - Pandora's - cornice drops, cliff drops, rock chutes, and pillows
  • Gate 5 - Huckleberry Canyon - more cliffs, cornices, trees, plus big open bowls
