Sierra-at-Tahoe® Resort Participates In National Safety Awareness Week Print-version

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Jan. 19, 2012 – Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort has joined forces with The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) for National Safety Week to educate skiers, riders and employees about the importance of safety on the slopes. Throughout the week of January 14-21, 2012 Sierra has hosted fun activities, giveaways, and discounts on helmets and other safety equipment.

To show Sierra Resort’s commitment to safety, Sierra extended National Safety week into the community of South Lake Tahoe, California. Sierra Ski Patrol visited South Lake Tahoe elementary schools where they hosted assemblies and spoke on search procedures, dog rescue, safety codes and Smart Style, the industry standard for safety in terrain parks. The Sierra Avalanche dogs were also in attendance for a first hand avalanche rescue demonstration.

Throughout the week Sierra Resort has been educating guests onsite at the resort on “Your Responsibility Code”. Each day throughout the week at the Safety Week Information Station, located at the base of the mountain next to the Easy Rider Express Chairlift, different topics of “Your Responsibility Code” were addressed. Topics include the correct way to load and unload lift chairs, information on how to approach jumps in terrain parks, the appropriate way to dress for the elements, and how to keep speed under control. A Speed Gun will be used to educate guests on how fast they are skiing/riding and share the appropriate speeds for different sections of the mountain. The famous “Mellow Yellow” cards will also be handed out throughout the week reminding guests about the yellow Slow Zones on the mountain and the purpose of skiing slow in those zones.

Along with emphasizing safety topics each day, Sierra is hosting weeklong activities as well. Guests who successfully recite the Responsibility Code throughout the week are entered into a raffle for a free helmet. Free oranges are being handed out all week keeping guests fueled up and healthy. As part of the HEADS UP campaign, the Wild Mountain Children’s Center offers kids an opportunity to enter the NSAA poster contest. Kids are asked to create a poster related to one of the seven points in “Your Responsibility Code”, and the posters can be entered into a national contest where contestants have an opportunity to win prizes from Burton Snowboards and Red Helmets.

After National Safety Awareness Week, Sierra will continue to enforce the “Your Responsibility Code” and remind guest’s safety is everyone’s responsibility.
